Our History

Meet the ORB DYNASTY

The Taghdisi family established Oriental Rug Bazaar in 1980 to provide the Houston community with every option for their fine rug, carpet, and tapestry needs. Before bringing their expertise to Houston, the family had been working worldwide in the industry for generations.

The family descends from the prominent rug merchant Haji Borujerdi, the man who commissioned the building of the famous Borujerdi-Ha House in Kashan, Iran, which is no longer a private residence but a museum. Today, Alan Taghdisi, son of Oriental Rug Bazaar founder Massoud Taghdisi and the seventh generation to carry on the family business, serves as the President of Oriental Rug Bazaar as well as his eponymous, world-renowned collection of antique rugs, carpets, and tapestries. The Alan Taghdisi Antique Collection, housed primarily in a specifically designed showroom in the Houston Oriental Rug Bazaar building, features many rugs of different types, all over 100 years old and in immaculate condition. This collection, which is also available in boutiques around the world, is believed to be the finest and largest amassed by a single collector in the world.

Housing the most premium inventory of its kind, the store and showroom has been located at 5525 Westheimer since Oriental Rug Bazaar opened in 1980. The luxury building was designed and constructed exclusively for the Taghdisi family's business and has become a Houston landmark. As the proprietors of the largest independently owned inventory of Persian, European, and Oriental rugs, carpets, and tapestries in the world, the Taghdisi's make it a priority to continuously expand their catalogue, employing buyers all over the world to acquire items from a variety of sources, such as artisans, markets, palaces and private estates. With a continually updated and improved supply of merchandise, Oriental Rug Bazaar has the rug to fit your needs, style, and budget.

Since establishing Oriental Rug Bazaar as the premier source for Persian, Oriental, and European rugs, carpets, and tapestries in Houston, the Taghdisi family has become very involved in the community. Alan and his family support local organizations such as Texas Children's Hospital, MD Anderson Hospital, SPCA, the Shriners' Hospital, Episcopal High School, the University of Houston, and many more. Additionally, Oriental Rug Bazaar has had the privilege of counting many prominent people as clients, including US Presidents, members of royal families, Hollywood celebrities, and sports stars.
